On June 12, 2026, the White House issued an export order that sent shockwaves through the AI industry. Anthropic was directed to immediately block foreign nationals from accessing its most advanced models, Claude Mythos and Fable 5, citing national security. Days later, CEO Dario Amodei was standing before G7 leaders, urging them to "resist the temptation to splinter" the global AI ecosystem.

The ban was swift and dramatic. Reports from The Verge and Bloomberg described the move as pulling a "kill-switch" on access that had already been extended to partners like SK Telecom. According to the Financial Times, Amodei framed the issue as one of collaborative development, not isolation.

But beneath the geopolitics of who gets access to frontier AI lies a more fundamental question that almost nobody is discussing: How do you verify the identity of an AI model?

The Order That Exposed a Gap

The White House directive wasn’t just about restricting access. It was about proving who is on the other end of an API call.
